Kuchipudi Dance Classes & Performances @ ICCT

By Dr. Ramana Vasili, Director - ICCT Dance Academy, Indian Ballet Theatre

Guru Parampara: Padma Vibhushan Dr. Vempati China Satyam was my Guru and trained by him in 1974 and since then associated with Kuchipudi Art Academy, Chennai. In addition, I and Smt. Chandra Prabha were graduated from Government College of Music and Dance, Hyderabad and Telugu University. I trained several dancers in 1980s along with Padmasri Sobha Naidu, another disciple of Dr. Vempati Satyam at Kuchipudi Art Academy, Hyderabad.

Indian Ballet Theatre, Tirupathi: We established Indian Ballet Theatre, School of Indian Classical Dance & Music in 1982 in the temple town of Tirupathi. Our students gave several hundred performances throughout Andhra Pradesh, in cities, Vishakapatnam, Nellore, Vijayanagaram, Tenali, Guntur, Sri Hari Kota (SHAR), Nagari, Chittoor, Sri Kalahasthi, Vijayawada, Kurnool, Thallapaka and so on. Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam (TTD) contracted and financed me to choreograph dances to Annamacharya Sankeertanas and invited us (IBT) to give Dance performances exclusively basing on Annamacharya Keerthanas. We have performed 3 hour full length programs several times during TTD Brahmotsavams and during Annamacharya Jayanthi & Vardhanthi at Thallapaka and Tirpupathi.

World Record Achievements: Kum. Vasumathi, a 13 year old student trained by us gave a 24 hour non-stop Kuchipudi Dance performance in Tirupathi in 1987. Similarly, Master Adit Sarma, a 6 year old student gave a 6 hour non-stop performance at Annamacharya Kalamandiram, Tirupathi in 1992 and won “Bala Ratna” award by Andhra Pradesh Government in 1993.

New Beginning: Since November 2014 I and my wife, Smt. Chandra Prabha have been teaching Kuchipudi Dance @ India Cultural Center and Temple, Eads, TN. We train students separately with their age groups and skill levels. Classes were held between 9:30-11:30am on Saturdays and Sundays.

1st Batch: All students who have completed complete 1 year training gave a DAZZLING performance on November 21, 2015 @ ICCT Temple. It’s important to note that all students that performed on stage had no prior experience and were well received by the audience. In addition, our students gave a 2nd performance during Sankrathi Sambaralu on January 30, 2016 and received a great applaud.

New Students Registration: We are accepting new students NOW. New students will be trained for one month and learning skills will be tested during the last week of July for acceptance into the program. Accepted students will continue their learning of Kuchipudi dance until June 30th 2019.

Senior Students Performances: Senior students now in 2nd year have started learning dances to Annamacharya & Rama Dasu Keerthanas. All students will be given opportunity to perform during ALL Temple events, such as Maha Sivarathri, Ugadi, Sri Rama Navami, Sri Krishnashtami, Brahmotsavams, ICCT Anniversary, ICCT Dance Academy Anniversary & Yagnam. Students are allowed to perform depending on the number of classes they have taken and their skill levels.

3rd Year & Arangetram: The word "Arangetram" is from the Tamil language and means ascending the stage by a dancer on the completion of formal training. It is a public graduation performance for any dance form. Students at the end of their 3rd year training will perform an Arangetram.

4th Year & Nattuvangam: Students will be trained in teaching and choreography. They also will be trained in Nattuvangam and techniques of conducting live orchestra and coordinating programs. Students who complete all 4 years successfully will be certified by ICCT Dance Academy/Indian Ballet Theatre and assist them to get their “DIPLOMA CERTIFICATES” from Telugu University of Hyderabad, India.

Dancing Bells of India: During the 12 months training students will be given an opportunity to perform @ ICCT Temple, Telugu Association of Memphis, Indiafest and other local organizations. Students who spend additional time and attend special classes will have additional opportunities to perform outside of Memphis. This privilege will be extended for students with extraordinary skills and talent and to parents who play active role in the growth of the dance academy. Only 15 new students will be admitted for 2017-2018 year. Parents and students who miss this opportunity should wait until June 2018 for next year admissions. Students successfully completed all training and give mandatory stage performances will be awarded a "Certificate of Completion" in November 2019 at a graduation ceremony.
