Shivaratri - Paanchahnika Dwajarohana Divya Kalyanamahotsavam

5th to 10th March 2016

Day #2: 7th March 2016

The main day/night of the 5 day celebrations is Day #2 - Maha Shivatri. It is believed that Lord Shiva saved the universe from darkness and ignorance. This is the day when luminous shiva linga emerged between Brahma and Vishnu to pacify them. This day is also believed to be the day that Shiva was married to the Goddess Parvati. The Maha Shivaratri festival, marks the convergence of Shiva and Shakti. The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael (Bilvam) leaves to Shiva, all-day fasting and an all-night-vigil (jagaran) with vedic ritualistic worship of Shiva. In the evening, Shiva and Parvathi are taken in procession around the temple using a Nandi vahana. Mahanyasa Purvaka Ekadasa Rudrabhishekam is performed from 7 PM to 12:30 AM. Lingodbhava Darsanam is held at 12:00 AM.
